Open SPSS, Stata and SAS files online
Survey data and research datasets come as .sav, .dta or .xpt — and without the matching statistics package they are hard to even look at. Here they open by drag and drop, as tables, with value labels in place of codes. The file is not uploaded.
Free to use. Drop the file on the window. Viewing only: export to Excel, CSV or Parquet to keep working with it. Windows version — 4.9 MB, no installation: details. Pro — $29 once: price.
SPSS .sav and .zsav
Compressed and uncompressed, long names, strings over 255 characters, Unicode and old code pages, dates.
Stata .dta
Stata 8 to 18 (formats 113–119), strL long strings, extended missing values .a–.z, %td and %tc dates.
SAS transport .xpt
XPORT v5 and v8: NHANES, CDISC SDTM and ADaM datasets, several datasets in one file.
Labels, not codes
Value labels are shown instead of codes — switch to codes in “File parsing”. Variable labels sit next to the column names.
What happens to the data
- Missing values — the system-missing dot in SPSS,
.and.a–.zin Stata and SAS — are empty cells. User-defined missing codes in SPSS (99 — “refused”) are shown as values, as SPSS shows them. - Dates become dates according to the variable’s format, so sorting and period filters work.
- Labelled columns become text with the labels; turn labels off to get the numeric codes back.
Step by step: open a .sav without SPSS, open a .dta without Stata, open a SAS .xpt.
What next
- Build a pivot table or a chart right on the data.
- Export to Excel or CSV — with labels or with codes, as shown on screen — or to Parquet for pandas and DuckDB.
- Remove names and IDs before sharing: anonymize a table.
FAQ
Do I need SPSS, Stata or SAS installed?
No. The files are read in your browser tab; nothing has to be installed.
Does the file go to a server?
No. Parsing is local — which matters for survey answers and clinical data.
Can I save changes back to .sav or .dta?
No, these formats are read-only. Export the table to Excel, CSV, JSON or Parquet.
What is not read?
SAS .sas7bdat files, SPSS portable .por files and SAS format catalogs (.sas7bcat).
