Build a pivot table in your browser
A register of a hundred thousand rows, and you need one small table: departments down the side, months across the top, the sum where they meet. Usually the file is taken into Excel and a pivot table is built there. Here it is built straight from the open file.
Free to use. “Analysis” → “Pivot table…”. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Windows version — 4.6 MB, no installation: details. Pro — $29 once: price.
How to build one
- Open a file — DBF, Excel, CSV, XML, JSON or a SQLite database.
- Choose “Analysis” → “Pivot table…”. The dialog suggests a start: a category such as region or department in the rows, a date by month in the columns and a sum. Names, IDs, birth dates and record numbers are not put into a pivot on their own.
- Change the fields if you like and press “Build”.
The pivot is computed over the rows on screen: for one year or one customer, filter first.
What it can do
- Several fields in both the rows and the columns: region and manager down the side, month across.
- Dates roll up to year, quarter, month or day — no helper column with the month number.
- Measures: sum, row count, average, minimum, maximum, number of distinct values, number of blanks.
- Totals on the right and at the bottom. An average total is computed over the rows, not as an average of averages; the distinct count is exact too.
- Highlighting by size, so the large values stand out without sorting.
- “Swap” turns rows into columns with one button.
Exporting the result
“Export to Excel” builds a workbook with the pivot: header, a total on the right and a “Total” row at the bottom. It is recomputed over all rows, not only the ones that fit on screen. “Copy as TSV” puts the pivot on the clipboard so it pastes into Excel or an email as a table.
FAQ
Does the file go to a server?
No. The pivot is computed in your browser tab, and the page technically cannot send the file’s contents to any other address.
How many rows can it take?
As many as open: the pivot is one pass over all the rows on screen. The one limit is 300 distinct values across the columns; if there are more, roll the date up or pick another field.
How is it different from grouping?
Grouping answers with a list — “Surgery: 120, Therapy: 80”. A pivot answers with a table: the same numbers also split by month or by another field.
