Split and merge columns in a table
A full name sits in one column, but you need three. Or the other way round: first and last name are separate, but the report wants one string. Excel offers Text to Columns and formulas with &; here it is one dialog, with a preview of the result and undo.
How to split a column
- Open a CSV, Excel, ODS or JSON file and turn editing on (the pencil button).
- “Edit” → “Split column…”, or “Split into columns…” in the header menu of the column.
- The delimiter is picked from the first rows — spaces, comma, semicolon, hyphen, slash. You can change it; the preview below updates as you go.
- Say how many parts you need and name the new columns. The rest of the string stays in the last part.
Merge, add, move
- “Merge columns…”: pick the columns and a delimiter — comma, hyphen, slash or your own. Empty values can be skipped without stray delimiters; the sources can be removed.
- “Add column…”: a name, a type and a default value; placed after a chosen column or at the start.
- Rename, delete, move left or right — in the column header menu, “Structure” group.
- “Transpose…” in the “Transform” menu: rows become columns, and the result opens in a new tab.
Formulas and checks that referred to a column by name are rebuilt; those that cannot be are dropped.
Undo and saving
Every action is one undo step, like any edit. The file on disk changes only on “Save”: CSV, JSON and Excel are rebuilt whole, with the new columns. DBF has its own “Table structure” dialog with types and lengths.
