Cell contents: image, document, bytes

Binary fields — a BLOB in SQLite, G and P fields in FoxPro, binary columns in Parquet — often hold photos, scans and documents. In the grid such a field looks like “⟨1,036 B⟩” and there is no telling what is inside. Here a right click opens the contents: the picture, the file type and the bytes themselves.

How to look

  1. Open a file with a binary field — SQLite, DBF with a G or P field, or Parquet.
  2. Right-click the cell → “Cell contents (image, bytes)…”.
A photo from a SQLite BLOB field: the type is detected from the contents, the bytes are below

The window shows the size, the type by content, the picture (if it is one) and a hex dump. “Save as file…” writes the picture or document itself to disk, without any wrapper.

What is recognized

Bytes of an ordinary cell

For an ordinary cell there is “Cell bytes…”. For DBF it shows the field’s bytes as they lie in the file: you can see the encoding, leading spaces and zeros, invisible characters — whatever makes values “look equal but not be”. For other formats it shows the cell text as UTF-8.

FAQ

Does the file go to a server?

No. The contents are decoded in your browser tab.

The image does not show — why?

The data may be truncated or damaged, or it is not an image. The type is detected by signature; without one, the window shows only the bytes.

Can I replace the picture in the field?

No, the window only reads. Save the file, fix it and put it back with the tool that owns the database.

How many bytes are shown?

The dump opens in portions: the first 4 KB at once and a “Show more” button. Saving writes the whole contents.

Your file never leaves your computer. Parsing happens in the browser, in a background thread. The page's security policy forbids sending data to third-party addresses — you can check this in the developer tools. After the first visit the app keeps working offline.
