Add a calculated column by formula
Joining first and last names, working out age from a birth date or adding tax to an amount usually means opening Excel, writing a formula and dragging it down a hundred thousand rows. Here the formula is written once and the column appears next to the others.
Free to use. “Transform” → “Calculated column…”, or the column header menu. Nothing is uploaded. Windows version — 4.6 MB, no installation: details. Pro — $29 once: price.
How to add one
- “Transform” → “Calculated column…” — or “Calculated column next to it…” in a column header menu, and the new column lands right after that one.
- Name it and write the formula. Columns and functions are inserted with a click, and under the formula you at once see the first values and the type of the new column.
- Press “Add column”.
The column is calculated on the fly: correct a surname and the full name updates by itself. Filter, sort, grouping and export to Excel, CSV or DBF all work on it.
Example formulas
| Task | Formula |
|---|---|
| Full name in one line | TRIM(FIRST + ' ' + LAST) |
| Age today | AGE(BIRTH) |
| Age on a date | AGE(BIRTH, DATE('2025-01-01')) |
| Days between two dates | DAYS(START, FINISH) |
| Amount with 20% tax | ROUND(AMOUNT * 1.2, 2) |
| A label by condition | IF(AMOUNT > 10000, 'large', 'regular') |
| A date 30 days later | START + 30 |
| A column with a space in its name | [E-mail address] |
It is the same language as the filter bar: + joins text and adds numbers, and one date minus another is the number of days between them. UPPER, LEFT, SUBSTR, REPLACE, YEAR, ROUND, COALESCE and others are available.
Writing the result into the file
A calculated column is not written to the file: it lives on top of the table. To keep the values, use “Write values to a column” in its header menu: the “Fill column” dialog opens with this formula, you pick the target column, the values land as unsaved edits, and the file changes when you press Save.
FAQ
Does the file go to a server?
No. The formula is calculated in your browser tab, and the page technically cannot send the file’s contents to any other address.
What if a row has no data for the formula?
The value is empty: division by zero, an empty date or text where a number is expected give a blank, not an error across the whole column.
Can a formula refer to another calculated column?
Not yet — a formula sees only the columns of the file itself.
